BCBSM Value Partnerships Supports a Range of CQIs
Collaborative Quality Initiatives (CQIs) address many of the most common and costly areas of surgical and medical care in Michigan. In each CQI, hospitals and physicians across the state collect, share, and analyze data on patient risk factors, processes of care, and outcomes of care, then design and implement changes to improve patient care. BCBSM financially supports the work of BMC2
- Coordinating Center operations
- Direct payments to participating sites to support data abstraction
- Pay for Performance payment available for hospitals to incentivize quality of care
- Value-Based Reimbursement payments available for physicians who meet defined quality goals
BMC2 regularly partners and collaborates with:
-
Michigan Value Collaborative
MVC supports BMC2 through creation and sharing of data related to cardiac rehabilitation utilization, readmission rates, and other post-discharge quality improvement opportunities. -
Michigan OPEN
Michigan OPEN helps us to identify best practices for opioid prescription in post-surgical patients. Using what we've learned from Michigan OPEN's work, we've set performance targets in BMC2-VasculaSurgery. During 2018 - 2021 the goal was to prescribe <10 pills. We saw a marked improvement in collaborative-wide performance on this measure from ~60% of sites prescribing <10 pills for designated procedure types in 2018, to over 80% in 2021. The current goal is prescribing <= 4 pills and, with use of multimodal pain management, patient satisfaction remains high. This all translates to far fewer unused/available opioids pills in the community. -
