Eric Cantey, MD is the consortium’s new associate director of BMC2 percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Dr. Cantey’s directorship follows the leadership of Dr. Devraj Sukul who is moving to Corewell Health West in Grand Rapids, where he will focus on structural heart care.
“Dr. Cantey brings extensive expertise in improving cardiovascular patient outcomes,” said BMC2 Program Director, Hitinder Gurm. “He is especially passionate about working in the high-risk coronary disease and shock populations.”
An assistant clinical professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and an interventional cardiologist at Michigan Medicine, Dr. Cantey graduated as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honor society from Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, where he served as a chief resident. He then continued his training at Northwestern by completing fellowships in general cardiology, interventional cardiology, and advanced structural and complex coronary disease. During his fellowship, he also obtained a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation.
Dr. Cantey aims to harness Dr. Sukul’s momentum. He hopes to build from his Dr. Sukul’s successes, particularly those related to intravascular imaging and the impact that his efforts had in advancing BMC2’s mission across Michigan.
Cardiovascular patients are our purpose – the heart and the North Star of everything we do.
“The real power of BMC2 is that – through engagement with all of the cath labs in Michigan – we can really improve quality of care throughout the state,” Dr. Cantey said.
He is eager to engage & learn from each of the consortium’s institutions. “I look forward to collaborating with our participants and learning what their current practice environment is like; what their challenges are, and what they value as important for their patients,” he said. “I am also excited about the opportunity for collaborative management of cardiogenic shock.”
From our sponsors at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network to our member institutions, to the physicians and other care providers, Dr. Cantey says that the critical aspect is the cardiovascular patient. “They are our purpose – the heart and the North Star of everything we do.”
