The BMC2 publication, “Use of a Liaison-Mediated Referral Strategy and Participation in Cardiac Rehabilitation After Percutaneous Coronary Intervention” is new in Circulation Cardiovascular Quality Outcomes.

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) improves outcomes after PCI but remains underutilized. A liaison-mediated referral (LMR), where a health care professional explains CR’s benefits, addresses barriers to participation, and places a referral before discharge, may promote CR use. BMC2 data were utilized to assess the impact of an LMR on CR participation after PCI.

The authors reviewed data of patients who underwent PCI at BMC2-participating hospitals between January 2021 and April 2022 and who were referred to CR before discharge. Patients who worked with a liaison had higher odds of participating in CR and a shorter delay in attending their first CR session compared with patients who did not work with a liaison.

This referral strategy may improve CR participation and patient outcomes after PCI.
