The BMC2 Vascular Surgery Physician Meeting was held on May 1st, 2024, at the Radisson Plaza in Kalamazoo. Dr. Nicholas Osborne presented BMC2 VS data slides which engaged attendees in discussion about ways to present data differently for EVAR and CEA complications, pre-procedure Heparin dose versus post-procedure DAPT for CEA procedures, and Protamine administration during a CEA for asymptomatic carotid stenosis versus post-procedure stroke and bleeding rates. Also, during the meeting:
- Dr. Bove presented the differences in carotid velocities for asymptomatic carotid stenosis between Michigan hospitals and proposed an initiative to standardize them.
- Dr. Keys reviewed the guidelines for asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis and proposed that the literature shows that there is little evidence that screening reduces stroke or mortality rates among this patient population.
- Dr. Halabi showed us in his presentation that a multidisciplinary team of professionals should manage the treatment of carotid artery stenosis.
- Dr. Mouawad discussed how the delivery of the stent contributes to outcomes after CAS and that the TCAR procedure has a more accurate stent delivery.
- Dr. Lee presented the role of the FDA in regulating aortic endovascular devices and the provider’s responsibility in ensuring the safe use of these devices.
There was also discussion about ways to enter more carotid information into the VQI database.
